Sales inspiration…

What if…

John and Abigail Adams had been more concerned with themselves and work/life balance than creating a democracy (if you’ve not seen the HBO miniseries – great stuff)?

What if… Abraham Lincoln (born on 2/12… coincidence? maybe) had quit trying after having a business go under and losing his first local legislative race (and then 3 congressional races and 2 senatorial races)?

What if… Martin Luther King didn’t have a dream and played it safe (and didn’t travel over 6 million miles giving more than 2500 speeches). What if he thought he was too young to have an impact (he did everything he did in a life of only 39 years)?

What if… Gandhi, Teresa, Roosevelt, Ford, Disney, Walton, Gates, Winfrey, Jobs, Stewart, and Ash hadn’t stepped up and worked hard. (What if the thousands of people who supported them hadn’t?) What if your police, military, firefighters didn’t?

What if… No one pushed it, risked it, and pushed it again (and again)?

Be obligated to your world (your customers, your people). Be SalesTough.

Sales evaluation…

Do your actions…

  1. create a positive buzz about you and your work?

  2. make others want you as a part of their team?

  3. make your employer cringe at the thought of losing you to a competitor?

  4. make your customers excited about referring you to their colleagues?

You want your actions to scream value without the need for you to say a word. This is where you want to be – with those in your company and industry – and with those to whom you’re selling.

This is what creates true economic and job security – the value you and your team create for others.

This is care (what it’s all about).

When you have the opportunity over the next few days, set a reminder to review these four questions at the end of each month. Then, give yourself a little (objective) attention by reviewing them and creating an action plan to improve in each area where you feel you should.

Easier said than done… still needs to be done.

Dig deeper and learn the 6 fundamentals of sales value (SalesTough #8).

  1. Prepare. Work hard to be ready for the opportunities that are important to you. Research. Practice. Perfect.

  2. Be awake. Pay attention to the people, events, and things around you. Evaluate logically and trust your gut instinct.

  3. Take action. Put yourself out there. Explore. Be vulnerable. Make contact with people. Take risks.

Samsung and Acer Chromebooks: More netbook than notebook

May 17, 2011, 7:30 AM PDT

Takeaway: Find out why the Samsung Series 5 and Acer Chromebooks are thin-client netbooks, not ultra-portable notebook replacements.

In December 2010, Google launched the Cr-48 Chrome notebook as part of a pilot program to test and promote its Chrome OS. I cracked open the Cr-48 and discovered hardware from Intel, Qualcomm, Azurewave, SanDisk, and Samsung. Five months later, Google is taking the project mainstream and has dubbed these new Chrome OS notebooks–”Chromebooks”.

At Google I/O 2011, the company unveiled the first two commercially available Chromebooks– the Samsung Series 5 and a machine from Acer. Starting June 15, consumers and businesses can purchase a Chromebook for under $500. Businesses can also rent them for $28/month per user through Google’s Chromebooks for Business program.

Google touts its program as a way for businesses to significantly reduce the total cost of ownership for their computers. And, TechRepublic’s Jason Hiner believes it may “entice a lot of organizations to consider ditching Windows for Chrome OS”.

This is probably true, but consumers and businesses need to understand exactly what they’re getting with the Samsung and Acer Chromebooks–netbooks, not notebooks.

Could the majority of the users you support work from a Google Chromebook right now?

Samsung Series 5 Chromebook

The Samsung Series 5 will be available in two flavors–a Wi-Fi + 3G model for $499.99 (US) and a Wi-Fi-only model for $429.99 (US). You’ll be able to purchase the Series 5 from Amazon.com and BestBuy.com.

Hardware Specifications:

  • Processor: 1.66 GHz Intel Atom dual-core N570

  • Graphics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150

  • Storage: 16GB mSATA SSD

  • RAM: 2 GB

  • Communications: Wireless-N Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n) and optional 3G (requires Verizon Wireless subscription)

  • Display: 12.1″ LED (WXGA, 1280×800 resolution, 16:10 aspect ratio)

  • Video out: VGA (via optional dongle)

  • Battery: 6-cell Li-ion battery (up to 8.5 hours of life)

  • Ports: Two USB 2.0 ports, 4-in-1 memory card reader (SD, SDHC, SDXC, MMC)

  • Camera: 1Mp HD Webcam

  • Audio: Built-in digital microphone and stereo speakers

  • Dimensions: 11.6 x 8.6 x 0.8 inches

  • Weight: 3.3 pounds

  • Keyboard: Full-size Chrome keyboard

  • Input device: Oversized multi-touch trackpad

Acer Chromebook

Like its Samsung counterpart, the Acer Chromebook will be available in Wi-Fi-only and Wi-Fi + 3G models. The Wi-Fi version is expected to cost $349 (US). The W-Fi + 3G model will undoubtedly cost more. You’ll be able to purchase the Acer Chromebook from Amazon.com and likely other retailers.

Hardware Specifications:

  • Processor: 1.66 GHz Intel Atom dual-core (likely the N570 used in Samsung’s Series 5)

  • Graphics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150

  • Storage: 16GB SSD

  • RAM: 2GB DDR3

  • Communications: 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and optional world-mode 3G capability

  • Display: 11.6-Inch LED-Backlit LCD (1366 x 768 resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio)

  • Video out: HDMI

  • Battery: 6-cell Li-ion battery (up to 8 hours of life)

  • Ports: Two USB 2.0 ports

  • Camera: 1.3Mp HD Webcam (1280 x 1024)

  • Audio: HD audio support with two built-in speakers

  • Dimensions: 11.6 x 8.6 x 0.8 inches

  • Weight: 2.95 pounds

  • Keyboard: Chrome OS keyboard

  • Input device: Touchpad

Bottom line: More netbook than notebook

Basically, the Samsung Series 5 and Acer Chromebooks are well-equipped netbooks. The N570 Atom processor and integrated graphics accelerator provide enough power to create and edit most business documents and browse the Web. But, I wouldn’t try watching HD video or running CPU-intensive applications on them. The tiny 16GB SSDs will also limit the machines’ usefulness when not connected to the network or an external storage device.

In all fairness however, Google doesn’t intend the Samsung Series 5 and Acer Chromebooks to be stand-alone computers. Chrome OS is getting a file manager and offline access for applications, but Chromebooks aren’t low-cost notebooks. They aren’t dumb terminals either. Chromebooks are thin-clients with the ability to function, albeit in a limited way, without a network connection.

The success of Chromebooks will depend on how deeply consumers and businesses buy into the resurgent thin-client computing model–where machines are always connected and the cloud handles the heavy lifting and storage.

19 Common Sales Errors and How to Avoid Them

According to management consultants, success is often the result of avoiding errors rather than merely making the smart moves. That’s certainly true in Sales, where these 19 common errors keep cropping up, even among experienced sales reps.

This post not only describes each error, but also explains why each error is made, how it affects the customer and (most importantly) how to avoid making the error in the first place.

I honestly believe that this may be the most useful post I’ve ever added to this blog, so enjoy.

10 things end users do that drive me crazy

Takeaway: Annoying users come with the support tech territory, but sometimes a little venting can help. See if these scenarios sound familiar.

As a member of a local consultancy firm, my primary jobs are remote support and backups. Because of this, I deal directly with our clients a lot. Although I am fond of many of those clients, most of them still display behaviors that drive me, as a consultant, crazy. And maybe it’s the excessive rain and storms we’ve been having, but these behaviors have escalated lately. So I thought I would share some of these things with you to see whether you’ve run into them — and whether you’ve encountered other behaviors you want to share with your fellow readers.

Please understand, I do this to lay down a bit of humor so we can all commiserate, cope, and (I hope) laugh at the follies we deal with day in and day out. I do not, in any way, mean to suggest that I think people are horrible or that I don’t like to deal with them.

Mac users hit with fake anti-virus when using Google image search

A massive SEO poisoning attack has hit Google, targeting Windows and Mac users alike. From rather innocuous terms related to global warming, to hot topics like Osama bin Laden's death, users are being hit with fake anti-virus programs, this time delivering payloads to users of Apple's Mac OS X.

JavaScript Fake AV scannerStrangely when surfing to the compromised URLs you are first prompted with a JavaScript-based fake scanner that appears to show an infected Windows XP computer, even when surfing from a Mac.

When you click or close the fake scanner page you are prompted to download a .zip file onto your Mac with a filename like "BestMacAntivirus2011.mpkg.zip".

Some of the downloads are a package installer that installs the fake software; others simply a contain ready-to-run Mac application.

JavaScript Fake AV scanner
Fake AV for Mac installer/download

In a similar social engineering trick as we have seen in Windows fake scanners it pretends to be a legitimate Mac anti-virus program called MacDefender.

The scanner doesn't actually touch the hard disk while "scanning", although on a Mac it can be hard to know without a hard disk light.

It pretends to find some very important things that may have been compromised, such as the Terminal application and the standard Unix utility test, also known to Unix shell programmers as [.

Mac fake scan results

Credit card at risk warningIt uses a lot of social engineering including redirecting your browser to rather offensive porn sites, although it does not appear they are doing this to make money, simply to imply that you are infected.

It also uses scare tactics like your credit card data being at risk. The reality is that your credit card is only at risk if you actually try to purchase the fake software.
