Poll: Will Android eclipse iPad the same way it did to iPhone?

  • Date: November 12th, 2010
  • Author: Jason Hiner

The Samsung Galaxy Tab — the first mass market Android tablet — has landed on shore but it is only the beginning of a tidal wave of Android tablets that are going to come to market in 2011. Will these tablets overwhelm the Apple iPad, which currently has over 90% market share in the tablet market, simply because of their sheer numbers?

With multiple manufacturers and wireless carriers dedicated to the Android platform in the smartphone market, Android has quickly zoomed past Apple’s iPhone in market share of that segment of the technology sector. As a result, many are expecting and assuming the same phenomenon to happen with tablets.

However, there are those who will argue that while the OS for these tablets has been adapted from smartphones using Apple iOS and Google Android, the market segment itself is much different than smartphones.

For one, the smartphone market was already growing rapidly and had several major players when Apple arrived with the iPhone in 2007 and changed the rules. The tablet market, on the other hand, had almost completely dried up before Apple gave people a new reason to buy tablets in early 2010. Now, the company has sold over seven million of them in six months and created a wave of demand for buyers who want to use the iPad either in place of or as a compliment to other computing devices.

Which argument do you agree with? Answer the poll and then jump into the discussion to explain why.

Take the poll

Will Android eclipse the iPad in the same way it did to the iPhone?

Samsung, LG show off new prototypes of futuristic flexible displays | blogs.techrepublic.com.com

This simply amazing!

Samsung, LG show off new prototypes of futuristic flexible displays

  • Date: November 11th, 2010
  • Author: Jason Hiner

Samsung and LG demonstrated differing — although possibly complimentary — glimpses of the future of display technology at the Flat Panel Display International event being held Nov. 10-12 in Chiba, Japan.

LG showed off a 19-inch e-paper display that can be flexed from side to side without distorting the text and images on the screen. Samsung demonstrated an OLED screen that can curved and bent while still displaying a perfectly-clear full-color image.

Here’s a short 94-second video clip from IDG that offers a glimpse of both technologies:

The LG e-paper displays are clearly aimed at low-cost, low-profile readers that will replace today’s books and newspapers, and potentially even many business documents as well.

Meanwhile, Samsung’s flexible OLED is targeting next-generation multimedia and computing devices. OLED (organic light emitting diode) is a much different technology than today’s LCD (liquid crystal display) screens. LCDs have screen with a separate light panel behind it to shine through the screen and display the images. OLED uses a single screen in which the pixels generate light when charged by an electrical current. This allows for OLEDs to be far thinner than traditional LCDs (even the newer ones with LED backlighting).

Online content often a victim of plagiarism | Career Management | TechRepublic.com

Toni Bowers, Head Blogs Editor on Career Management at TechRepublic.com writes:

In past blogs, I’ve recommended that IT pros increase their (positive) web presence by writing technical articles. This can be done in a personal blog or by writing-for-pay for technical publications.

In light of a recent event that has been making the blogosphere rounds, I feel the need to make you guys aware of one the caveats of writing for money on the web: People will steal your stuff.

Sometimes they’ll steal it without really knowing the concept of plagiarism. They’ll run your piece and retain your byline but on their site and without asking your permission in advance. Basically they’re getting the content someone else paid for, for free. This would be a great business model if it were, oh I don’t know, LEGAL. Also, it harms the bottom line of the online business that actually paid for the content, since most of those businesses depend on Google traffic and incoming links.

5 Ways You Can Block A Facebook Stalker

Facebook is a great platform for networking. You can reconnect with old friends from school or stay in touch with family and friends who live far away. Facebook makes it easy to find and get in touch with people. However, this feature can haunt you when someone you wish you had never met won’t stop messaging and harassing you.

If your stalker’s prime route of contact is through Facebook, there are several things you can do to block that Facebook stalker and make it difficult for them to contact you. This article will guide you through the options you have. The two final steps can also help to never attract a stalker in the first place.

If the Facebook stalker is or was on your friend list, unfriending them is not enough. Anyone not your friend on Facebook can still search and find your profile and see everything that you share with everyone. The only way to exclude that person, especially if you have mutual friends on Facebook, is to block them.

There are three different routes through which you can block people.

Samsung Galaxy Tab gets an enterprise assist from Polycom | Tech Sanity Check | TechRepublic.com

The biggest surprise with the Apple iPad has been how quickly the enterprise has warmed up to it. One of the iPad’s newest competitors, the Samsung Galaxy Tab, is an Android tablet that has mostly been portrayed as a consumer tablet for surfing web pages, reading e-books, and watching movies.

However, on Tuesday the Galaxy Tab got a shot in the arm for enterprise adoption when Samsung announced a partnership with Polycom to embed Polycom’s voice and video communications technology into the Galaxy Tab. It will be implemented as a Polycom app that will allow the Galaxy Tab to connect to the Polycom video conferencing systems that are widespread across many big companies. The app will also connect to other third party telepresence and video conferencing platforms that use industry standard protocols.

An excerpt from Attitude is Everything by Vicki Hitzges | simpletruths.com

An excerpt from

Attitude is Everything

by Vicki Hitzges

Years ago, I was the public relations director for motivational guru, Zig Ziglar. At the time, he was arguably the best-known, most loved speaker in the world. When audience members heard Zig, they witnessed a man chockfull of energy, vitality and joy. Having worked closely with him and knowing him well, I can tell you that the Zig you saw on stage was the real Zig Ziglar. In fact, I can't remember ever seeing him when he was not happy and upbeat.

The Zig I knew was one carbonated guy.

Every time Zig answered his home phone, he picked up the receiver and said with gusto, "This is Jean Ziglar's happy husband!" And he meant it!

Awhile back one of Zig's closest friends and I were discussing Zig's aura of happiness. "Completely genuine," his friend said. "I have never seen him down." Then he added thoughtfully, but with love, "Hardly what you'd call normal."

"What's Zig's secret?" I asked.

"I think," he said, "it comes down to feeling grateful. Never met a guy more grateful than Zig. Period."

You'd think anyone that grateful must have had an easy life. But that's not so.

Zig started out poor. Dirt poor. His father died when he was six, leaving his mother to raise eleven children alone. The family was virtually penniless. Yet despite their poverty, Mrs. Ziglar instilled a strong work ethic in her children and raised them to believe that both she and God loved them. She also instructed her children to practice saying "please" and "thank you." Those lessons stuck. Her formula of work, love and faith made their difficult lives easier. Gratitude made their lives enjoyable.

Zig once told me, "When we neglect to require our children to say 'thank you' when someone gives them a gift or does something for them, we raise ungrateful children who are highly unlikely to be content. Without gratitude, happiness is rare. With gratitude, the odds for happiness go up dramatically."

Years ago, Zig created the popular phrase, "Have an attitude of gratitude." According to Zig, "The more you recognize and express gratitude for the things you have, the more things you will have to express gratitude for."

I know firsthand that giving thanks brings joy. Awhile back, I heard Oprah Winfrey urge viewers to keep a Gratitude Journal. It seemed pretty schmaltzy to me, so I didn't do it. But Oprah was a jackhammer. Day after day, week after week, she kept pounding on that idea. I'd catch her show here and there. Same thing: Keep a Gratitude Journal. A few months later, I was speaking to a government group and staying in a cruddy hotel. I was seated at the hotel's indoor restaurant by a swimming pool reeking with enough chlorine to purify the Love Canal. As I waited impatiently for my meal to arrive, I suddenly remembered Oprah's directive. What the heck? I had a pen and some scrap paper.

I listed my mother who spent time each day praying for me. I wrote down my father who deeply loves me. My kind, funny brother and his family. My job and the opportunity to travel and encourage people. Friends. Laughter. For the fact that I had a place to sleep that was safe. For a private bathroom. (You start listing - you begin to get thankful!) I quickly listed about 30 things and noticed that not only did I have a lot to be thankful for, but suddenly I was in a terrific mood!

Publisher Malcolm Margolin was grateful for something that's right outside our doors, but most of us have never taken the time to experience it. He wrote, "The next time it begins to rain... lie down on your belly, nestle your chin into the grass, and get a frog's-eye view of how raindrops fall... The sight of hundreds of blades of grass bowing down and popping back up like piano keys strikes me as one of the merriest sights in the world."

That might strike you as advice from a person with not nearly enough to do, but personally, I like it. If Margolin can feel joy in soggy clothes looking at wet grass, you and I can find all kinds of things for which we can give thanks!

Try it! Count your blessings. Jot them down. At least stop and think of as many things as you can that you're thankful for right now. It worked for Oprah, Zig, Margolin and me. Give it a shot. If you want to feel happy, try on an attitude of gratitude for a change in your mood, your outlook and you.

Will smartphones and TVs join forces to replace PCs? | Tech Sanity Check | TechRepublic.com

Who remembers the days of the original IBM PC? They weighed a ton! You could possible drive a truck over those chassis without buckling them. Then placed beautifully on top of the chassis was a14" green monitor that also weighed in quite well.

Reading this article just shows how things can change.

Discovering and valuing people you really admire is the best way to discover and value yourself. ~Hank Wasiak #IM

Half Full or Half Empty? It's both!

Focus on what's in the glass.

I am 66 years old and have been blessed to have a good life, a wonderful family and a pretty successful career. At age 60 I discovered Asset-Based Thinking and since then I have found more meaning in work, determination, personal fulfillment, confidence and humility than I could ever have imagined. As I contemplated what's ahead, I found it rewarding to look back through the lens of Asset-Based Thinking and imagine the upside of the future.

Here are five ABT insights that are guiding me that I hope will help you.

Power is Who You Are Not What You Have.

You always have something of value to add. Always. Be Authentic. Expose yourself. Rather than relying on external sources to fuel your progress, look inside yourself to find your Signature Presence...your unique combination of passions, capabilities, qualities, values and beliefs. Let passion be your power and the most magnetic version of you will shine through. Embrace your assets. Never doubt them. Put them out there for people to see and watch what happens.

Forget Perfection. Pursue Progress.

Preoccupation with eliminating flaws to achieve perfection is pointless and invites self-absorption. Relentlessly pursuing progress promotes self-awareness and growth. Measure everything you do by the progress you make and your aspirations. Never stop learning.

Be an Opportunity Advocate Rather than a Problem Solver.

I spent most of my early years in business helping clients avoid or solve problems. And why not? Solving problems yields tangible results and gets you a pat on the back. The problem with a problem fixation is that it usually protects the status quo and, at best, winds up being a zero sum game. Try seeing problems as just a pause. See through them and focus on how much you can accomplish by spending most of the time seizing opportunities, finding the potential in people rather than seeing their shortcomings and taking opportunistic risks rather than avoiding them. Jump in. Immerse yourself in opportunities.

Mentors Matter - Imitate Shamelessly and Often.

No matter how long you've been at it, you can be both a mentor and be mentored. They go hand in hand. Everyone needs guidance, inspiration and motivation. Find people you admire and put them on your Mt. Rushmore. Let them know how much you admire them and why. Mentoring can come from anywhere, anyone at anytime. Keep your vision turned on and tuned in so you don't miss the many gifts that mentoring brings.

Live Legacies Now.

Leaving a legacy makes your life meaningful. Living your legacy changes the game because what you do right now contributes to your legacy in real time. Building your legacy in the present inspires others. We all have at least one "Mighty Cause" in us...a reason for being that gives us special meaning. Finding yours and making that part of your legacy is one of the best gifts you can give yourself.

Life is good. The life you can imagine and create is even better. Live on the upside.
